AI technology will be integrated in classrooms for San Bernardino Unified School District students

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (KABC) -- Monday was the start of the new school year for thousands of students in the San Bernardino City Unified School District and the Chino Valley Unified School District.

"I'm kinda nervous and excited because I get to see my friends again," fourth grader Benjamin Cazares said.

Students at George Brown Jr. Elementary are ready for another year of learning.

"He did sleep. He had his outfit all laid out. He even beat me to the car and was waiting for me," Melissa Cunningham, mother of a student, said.

The teachers are also ready.

"It's a fun journey because you're getting to know your students. You have a new group of students - 33 students - that you just want to make sure they come in, they feel nurtured, feel safe and feel like they're cared for," fourth grade teacher Lorraine Bowen said.

This school year there's new technology in store for everyone.

"This is an exciting year for us. We're coming back to new innovations with AI, and our families and students are really going to get a heads-up and understanding on how to use this on a day-to-day basis and what it can do for our students, staff and family," the principal at George Brown Jr. Elementary, Dr. Christine Ramirez, said.

Parents we spoke to are curious to see how integrating AI in the classroom will play out.

"I have learned quite a bit about how useful it can be," Cunningham said.

"Very difficult, all this technology, but we learn together," another parent, Alex Cazeres, said.

Teachers, parents and students are all ready to embark on this AI adventure together.

"It's amazing what we can do with AI. I'm taking it slowly, step by step, because it's a lot at once. I'm definitely old school, but we definitely know that AI can help us," Bowen said.

"Their friends, the environment, the vibes from the teachers -- everyone is very friendly at this school, and this is a very good school," Alex Cazares said.
