On Sunday, July 27, 2025, at approximately 3:15 a.m., the Orangetown Police Department responded to a report of a house fire on Summit Street in the Village of Nyack. Upon arrival, officers located the burning home and confirmed an active structure fire.
As flames spread rapidly through the residence, officers heard voices calling for help from inside. They entered the home and located a man and an elderly woman on the first floor who were attempting to escape. Both were assisted safely out of the building.
Officers were then informed that another male remained trapped on the second floor, which was already engulfed in flames. Two Orangetown Police Officers courageously crawled up the smoke-filled stairwell, where they discovered an unconscious man. They pulled him to safety and out of the house.

The Nyack Fire Department led suppression efforts, assisted by the Central Nyack, Orangeburg, Valley Cottage, Piermont, and West Nyack Fire Departments under mutual aid. EMS agencies on scene included the Nyack, Nanuet, Congers, and South Orangetown Ambulance Corps, as well as Rockland Paramedics Services. The American Red Cross was notified to assist displaced residents.
