Creating a Trade-in

How do I submit items for Trade-In?

On the Trade-In landing page, select the category of the device you want to trade-in to get started. Do not deregister the device(s) you want to trade in until after you have created your trade-in order. Next, select the item(s) you’re trading in. Trade-in products must match the exact model on the device selection screen. Color does not have to match.

Next, answer a few questions about the condition of your item(s). Once you create your order you will receive a confirmation email with instructions on how to send Amazon your trade-in device. For step-by-step directions see the Submit a Trade-In help page.

Where do I see my Trade-in discount?

Some trade-in's may be eligible to earn a limited-time instant discount or trade-in rebate toward the purchase of a new qualifying Amazon device (not eligible for cellphone or video game trade-ins). When you go through the process for creating a trade-in order, your instant discount or rebate is displayed at the Trade-in review step. Customers may redeem the instant discount or see their trade-in rebate amount during checkout when they purchase a qualifying Amazon device.

Promotions are limited to one per person, per device category, per calendar quarter (beginning January 1, April 1, July 1 and October 1 - see Bonus Offer Terms). For example, if a customer creates multiple trade-in orders for the same device category within the same calendar quarter, then the first trade-in order will be eligible to receive the trade-in discount, but the others will only be eligible to receive gift cards for the value of their trade-in item(s). You can keep track of your trade-in order status and discount details on the Your Trade-in Account page.

How do I prepare my device for Trade-In & remove my personal data?

After creating your trade-in order, please unlock or deregister your device from cloud services (if applicable) before sending it in. We also recommend performing a factory reset to ensure all your data is removed from the device. Unlocking from cloud services and performing a factory reset is required for all iOS, Android, Windows and Nintendo device trade-ins. You can find instructions by visiting Unlock or Deregister Your Device for Trade-In. Please note that deregistering your device will only remove it from your account, your personal data will not be removed. For Amazon devices, instructions on how to factory reset your device can be found at Digital Services and Device Support page.

What will you do with any data left on the device that I trade in?

You are solely responsible for removing all data, including confidential and personal data, from the device prior to shipping or dropping off at a participating store. Amazon does not accept any responsibility or liability for any lost files or data. If a SIM car or similar data storage is discovered in a device, it is destroyed upon acceptance of the item.

What condition do my items need to be in?

We currently accept items ranging from non-functional to good condition. Irrespective of the condition of the device, you may still be eligible for a limited-time promotional discount towards the purchase of a new qualifying Amazon Device.

What if my device doesn’t qualify for Trade-in?

You can recycle Amazon Devices and accessories through our Amazon-approved recycler at no cost to you and with free shipping.

My device is financed through a third-party or cellphone carrier. Can I still trade it in?

We only accept devices that are owned outright. If we receive a device that is still under a financing contract, it will be returned to you at no charge.

Trade-in benefits

What is Instant Payment?

Depending on the estimated value of your trade-in device(s), you may be eligible for Instant Payment. Instant Payment customers will receive their trade-in benefits (which may include an Amazon.com Gift Card and/or instant discount) immediately upon creation of your trade-in order.

Eligibility for Instant Payment may vary from one trade-in order to another. In order to qualify for Instant Payment, you must reside in the United States, and have a valid payment instrument with sufficient credit limit associated with your Amazon account (among other requirements). See the Instant Payment section of the Amazon Trade-In Program Terms & Conditions page for more details.

What is a trade-in rebate?

A trade-in rebate is a limited-time promotional offer where customers can get a retroactive discount on a new Amazon device by trading in older devices from Amazon or other manufacturers. Customers will receive their discount amount back to their original payment method after 1) purchasing their new device with the trade-in rebate, and 2) sending their trade-in device(s) to Amazon. Cellphone and video game trade-in's are currently not eligible to receive trade-in rebates, but are eligible for an Amazon.com Gift Card.

To redeem your trade-in rebate, pay the current price for your new eligible Amazon device at the time you checkout (the rebate amount will appear in checkout), then you will be credited back the discount amount to your original payment method 10-15 business days after you send or drop-off your trade-in item(s). Once your trade-in item(s) condition is verified by Amazon, you will also be issued an Amazon.com Gift Card to your Amazon account for the final value of your trade-in device(s), if applicable.

How is gift card value determined?

Your final Amazon.com gift card value depends on the model, generation and condition of your device. To qualify for the highest value, your device must be in good condition with all features operational. It cannot have any breaks, dents, cracks, missing buttons, or other defects beyond normal wear and tear. Learn more by reading our Electronics Eligibility Criteria. If condition criteria is not met, you can choose to have your Trade-in device returned to you or receive a lower value than the original estimate.

How do I use my benefits towards my next device purchase?

Before you can use your benefits, you must first create a trade-in order. Some trade-in offers may include a limited time promotional discount towards a new qualifying Amazon Device (not available for cellphone or video game trade-ins), either given instantly or in the form of a trade-in rebate.

If you did not receive Instant Payment, your Amazon.com Gift Card will be issued to your Amazon account after we verify the condition of your trade-in item(s). If you also received a trade-in rebate, you can redeem it by purchasing your new eligible Amazon device at current price. The rebate amount will be displayed in checkout. After you send or drop-off your trade-in item(s), the rebate amount will be credited back to your original payment method within 10-15 business days.

If you received Instant Payment, you will receive your Amazon.com Gift Card instantly, and your instant discount towards the purchase of a eligible Amazon device will be displayed during checkout. The discount will be applied automatically to your next qualifying Amazon device purchase. If there are two or more qualifying devices in your cart during checkout, the discount will be applied to the device with the lesser value. See the Instant Payment section of the Amazon Trade-In Program Terms & Conditions page for more details.

What are the limits on how many promotional discounts can I get?

Your trade-in promotional discount is limited to 1 per customer account, per device category, per calendar quarter (beginning January 1, April 1, July 1 and October 1). See Bonus Offer Terms for a complete list of eligible device categories.

Only one promotional discount (if applicable) may be issued per Trade-in order, regardless of the number of items included in that order. Once an order has been created, the promotional discount (if applicable) will be tied to that order and cannot be changed, unless that order is cancelled. Pending orders may be cancelled in your Trade-in Account Page.

What are the limits on how many devices I can trade in per order?

There is a limit of 5 devices per Trade-in order, and a limit of 2 Trade-ins total for the exact same device (make / model) excluding color per calendar quarter (Q1 = Jan-Mar, Q2 = Apr-Jun, Q3 = July-Sept, Q4 = Oct-Dec). There is no limit on the number of Trade-in orders you can place for gift card redemption, provided those orders do not contain more than 2 of the same device in total, and do not exceed a combined value of $1800 per order.

How long will it take to receive payment once I trade in my item?

If you mail us your trade-in item(s), please allow up to 15 business days for your device to be processed and payment issued (if applicable). If you bring your Trade-in order confirmation email and item(s) to drop off at one of our participating trade-in locations, then your item(s) will be processed and payment issued (if applicable) within 10 business days. Please check your email after creating your Trade-in order for instructions on how to send us your trade-in.

Unless your payment was given instantly, then an Amazon.com Gift Card will be applied to your Amazon account for the value of your trade-in item(s) after they have been verified by Amazon. If you received and used a Trade-in rebate (not available for cellphone or video game trade-in's), then you will be credited back the discount amount to your original payment method (please allow up to 3 business days for the refund to be credited). You should receive an email as soon as your benefits are applied. Track your Trade-in status in Your Trade-in Account page.

What happens to my Trade-in benefits if my device is returned or rejected?

If your Trade-in device is rejected and/or returned, your order will be cancelled and you will no longer be eligible to receive your benefits. Your device will be sent back to the return address you specified when you created your Trade-in order.

If you received Instant Payment, the value of the Gift Card will be rescinded. Charges will first attempt to be deducted from the Amazon.com Gift Card issued for the Trade-in item(s). If the gift card is empty, or has has an insufficient balance, then the full amount owed back will be charged to your credit card on file instead (even if there are other gift cards with value on your account).

How can I prevent my trade-in device from being rejected and/or returned?

To prevent your trade-in from being rejected and/or returned, ensure the following criteria is met before sending us your device:

  1. Excluding color, the device you send matches the exact make/model of the device selected during trade-in order creation.
  2. Your cellular device is owned outright by you, and is not under any payment contract with a third party / cellular carrier.
  3. Your cellular device is unlocked from cloud/ carrier services and all personal accounts are removed, and/or the device has been factory reset.
  4. The device successfully connects to wifi.
  5. The device is constructed of original parts, and has not been customized in any way, internally or externally.
  6. The device does not have any internal components projecting outside of it, such as an expanded battery or loose wiring.

Learn more by reading our Electronics Eligibility Criteria. If your device does not meet this criteria, consider recycling it instead.

Your device may be downgraded (but still accepted) if the device's condition does not match what was specified during order creation. During Trade-in order creation, you may elect to have your device returned to you (free of charge) in the event of a downgrade instead of accepting a reduced value.

After I complete my trade-in, how do I find out if I received my trade-in gift card and promotional discount (if applicable)?

You can find information about the status of your trade-in order and benefits in your Trade-in Account Page. You will also be notified via email of any changes in your trade-in status.

Unless your trade-in order qualified for Instant Payment, any Amazon.com Gift Cards offered upon order creation will be in a pending state, and cannot be redeemed until that order's item(s) are received and verified by Amazon. If you received and used a Trade-in rebate (not eligible for cellphone or video game trade-ins) towards the purchase of a new eligible Amazon Device, then you will be credited back the discount amount to your original payment method (please allow up to 3 business days for the refund to be credited). For trade-in's that you mail via UPS, please allow up to 15 business days for processing and issuing your trade-in payment (if applicable). If you bring your trade-in into one of our participating Trade-In locations, then your item(s) will be processed and payment issued (if applicable) within 10 business days.

What happens to my instant payment if my Trade-in is retuned or rejected?

If you received Instant Payment, Amazon will claw back the value of the gift card that was given in good faith. Any charges will first be deducted from the Amazon.com gift card issued for the trade-in device, with any remaining balance charged to your credit card on file (even if there are other gift cards with value on your account).

What happens to my Trade-in benefits if i don't send in my Trade-in device?

In order to keep your benefits, you must send in or drop off your device within 45 days. The trade-in deadline is provided in your Trade-in order confirmation email and can be found in your Trade-In Account page. If you do not complete your trade-in in time, your order will expire, and you will no longer be eligible to receive your benefits. Your pending trade-in order will still count against the promotional limits and device limits described above, unless it's cancelled.
