WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, Manhattan (WABC) -- An ongoing water leak suspended No. 1 subway service in Washington Heights for hours on Tuesday, before being restored in the evening.

Officials say the leak at the 168 St-Washington Hts. station was attributed to the failure of century old infrastructure.

MTA workers raced against the clock to try and clear out water and muck while trying to drain and ultimately repair the source of the leak.

Service was suspended between 137 St-City College and Dyckman St stations since 6 a.m. It has since been restored.

There was extremely limited service between South Ferry and 137 St and between Dyckman St and Van Cortlandt Park.

Most No. 2 and 3 trains were running locally as an alternative during the disruptions.

Passengers could also use the A and C trains for service to and from nearby stations in Washington Heights.

MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber said Tuesday's repairs were a continuation of work from the weekend that "did not go well."

"For 100 years no one has fixed the structure and there was water leaking, we are fixing it, the first attempt to fix it did not go well, and we are now in the process of clearing out all the water to make sure we can provide service, hopefully in the evening rush," Lieber said.

The MTA said once all the muck is cleared up, they would run a test train to make sure everything is running smoothly.

Metro-North cross-honored MetroCard holders at no additional cost from Marble Hill to Grand Central.

There were also free shuttle buses running on Broadway heading up to Dyckman or downtown to 137th Street.
