25 dogs rescued from Long Island home in 'deplorable condition'
Anthony Carlo reports from Bay Shore, Long Island.

BAY SHORE, Long Island (WABC) -- Officials in Suffolk County removed at least 25 dogs from a home in bad shape in Bay Shore on Tuesday.

Suffolk County SPCA and police responded to the home on Richland Boulevard after receiving a 911 call that morning about barking dogs.

The SPCA says 25 dogs were removed from both inside and outside the home. It is believed they had been left alone for several days.

Authorities say the dogs were hiding throughout the house and the home was in deplorable condition.

The home was deemed uninhabitable due to high levels of ammonia.

The dogs were evaluated in a MASH mobile home hospital parked outside the house and are now being cared for at the Islip Animal Shelter.

The homeowner, Robin Mills, was not home on Tuesday.

She was arrested in 2017 and charged with 22 counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty for allegedly neglecting 21 dogs and one bird.

Neighbors say they have known for years that dogs were being hoarded in the home.

"The consistent barking and yelping and screaming, it really made me think what's going on next door," neighbor Dani Zaragoza said.

Other residents said they have had to hire exterminators to keep rodents of their property.

"That is horrendous, disgusting, no words, we all feel for the animals, they're helpless," Melissa Sutch said.

Neighbors said they hope Mills gets the help she needs.

Charges against Mills are still pending in Tuesday's incident.
