WEST FARMS, Bronx (WABC) -- More than eight years after a mother of four was killed by stray gunfire, a man has been indicted in the case.
48-year-old Cindy Diaz had been walking home with dinner for her children in the West Farms section of the Bronx when bullets hit her in the chest and arm in 2017.
For years the case went unsolved.
Police recently linked 31-year-old Jonathan Odenthal Diaz to the crime.
He was taken into custody on Tuesday.
Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark announced that Diaz was arraigned on a charge of second-degree Murder for the fatal shooting of a Bronx mother of four who was walking home.
He was remanded and is due back in court on November 13, 2025.
"This defendant allegedly opened fire on a public sidewalk, killing a mother whose four sons were waiting for her to return home with dinner. This defendant's alleged actions demonstrate a callous disregard for human life and resulted in the tragic death of an innocent bystander," District Attorney Clark said.
Diaz was not the intended target.
The victim was rushed to Saint Barnabas Hospital, where she died from her injuries.
