HIGHBRIDGE, The Bronx (WABC) -- A ribbon cutting ceremony was held this week to celebrate the new CITYarts Shakespeare Step Street project in the Highbridge section of the Bronx.
Artist Fiona Agabbin, SYEP interns, local schools and community centers in the Bronx, and the Department of Transportation worked together to revitalize the stairs at 1161 Shakespeare Ave., between Shakespeare and Anderson avenues, by painting a mural on them.
The mural aims to reflect the identity of the neighborhood by highlighting the vibrancy of the of the borough, the love of music, flowers from Shakespeare's past community garden, and a large-scale depiction of the avenue's iconic namesake: William Shakespeare, officials with CITYarts said in a press release.
The project is part of CITYarts' larger efforts to encourage youth to bring art into their own neighborhoods and communities.
"We hope that these images, words, and themes will inspire residents on a daily basis and expand their imaginations," wrote CITYarts founder, executive, and creative director Tsipi Ben-Haim. "Moreover, we want it to awaken their curiosity to reach for the stars!"
