NEW YORK CITY (WABC) -- Heads up commuters: Service suspensions have begun on the No. 4, 5 and 6 train lines south of the Grand Central-42nd Street subway station due to track replacement work, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced.

The service suspensions, which started at 11:30 p.m. on Friday and end at 5 a.m. on Monday, come as crews replace concrete under switches north of 14th Street. The suspensions will also happen next weekend between Friday, August 22 and Monday, August 25.

As part of the service changes, No. 4 trains will not run between Grand Central-42nd Street and Crown Heights-Utica Avenue or New Lots Avenue. No. 4 trains will also run local between Woodlawn and Grand Central-42nd Street.

No. 5 trains will not run between East 180th Street and Bowling Green, and will run only north of East 180th Street to and from Eastchester-Dyre Avenue. Meanwhile, No. 6 trains will not run between Grand Central-42nd Street and Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall, and will run local between Pelham Bay Park and Grand Central-42 Street.

To accommodate commuters impacted by the changes, the MTA says there will be special weekend service on the W train line that will run from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. According to the MTA, this will be the first time that the W train will operate on the weekend since March 15.

The 42nd Street Shuttle will also operate all weekend, including during overnight hours, when it is typically not in service.

The MTA says the track replacement work is necessary to ensure structural stability and functionality of the city's subway system. Replacing the concrete also protects the system from leaks and corrosions, prolonging the overall state of subway infrastructure, the MTA said.
