JERSEY CITY, New Jersey (WABC) -- Exclusive video shows the terrifying moments in Jersey City when bullets started flying, sending people scrambling for cover.

An 11-year-old boy was caught in the crossfire and was shot in the leg.

Police are still looking for the shooter.

Surveillance video shows people scattering and taking cover behind parked cars as bullets went flying.

A mother heard the chaos outside of her home around 10 p.m. on Sunday night, and she believed it was just Memorial Day festivities.

She quickly discovered it was gunshots.

"When you heard it again after a small pause, it was like no that's not fireworks, that's gunshots," she said.

It happened steps from a playground near Stevens Avenue and MLK Drive.

The victim, believed to be an 11-year-old boy was rushed to Jersey City Medical Center with a gunshot wound to his leg, investigators said.

"I heard the shots, I took my children went into the room and closed the door. It's a sad situation," a neighbor said.

Police returned to the scene Monday morning and found more shell casings.

Detectives think a car found near MLK Drive and Orient Avenue with an apparent bullet hole is connected to the investigation.

"My son is nine years old, and I could imagine how a mom feel," another neighbor said.

Longtime Jersey City resident Ishea Neal says the city needs more resources to stop violence.

"We actually make healing circles where parents can come in because it's not easy being a parent. Right. Particularly here. We have food, insecurities. We have a whole bunch of things that we need to worry about as parents," Neal said.

Neighbors reported hearing at least 10 shots fired.

So far, there are no arrests.
