BAY SHORE, Long Island (WABC) -- A police shooting on Long Island on Tuesday afternoon appears to be an attempted suicide by cop, a law enforcement official said.

The man, identified as 33-year-old Joseph Restaino, told 911 around 1:25 p.m. he was holding a person hostage in his home at 1625 Ohio Ave., and he wanted to die.

When officers arrived, they say Restaino threatened them by displaying a long sword, and refused to drop the weapon.

Authorities say a taser was used, and officers made additional commands for Restaino to drop the sword.

They say the taser was not effective, and at lease one officer shot Restaino.

The 33-year-old was taken to South Shore University Hospital to treat his injuries. His condition is currently unknown.

No police officers were injured in the gunfire, and no hostages were in the man's home.

An official says this is being preliminarily investigated as an attempted suicide by cop.
