NEW YORK (WABC) -- Despite a lawsuit filed Wednesday accusing Mayor Eric Adams of using the NYPD to run a criminal enterprise, many law enforcement unions are sticking with him.
A list of city worker unions came out to officially endorse Adams for reelection Thursday afternoon, including multiple unions representing sanitation workers, correction officers, as well as law enforcement, which included separate groups for detectives, sergeants, lieutenants and captains.
Adams is leaning in to his law enforcement background and accepted the endorsement of a coalition of law enforcement unions on the steps of City Hall.
"I ran on public safety, I stated, I will make our city safe, I know the prerequisite to our prosperity is public safety," Adams said.
He didn't mention Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani by name, but took direct jabs at his vacuum of support from the business community and his public safety platform.
The police unions that endorsed Adams influence law enforcement which was a major factor in his 2021 election win.
"We saw what happened on our transit system when I became mayor, no one wanted to ride, we're now up to 4.6 million riders, an average of only five felonies a day," Adams said.
While Adams can boast his record on crime -- big decreases in the overall crime index and the lowest number of shootings in recorded history -- he faces a tough road ahead overcoming trust issues with voters.
It stems from allegations and investigations of corruption within his administration, being federally indicted, and his ties to President Donald Trump.
Meantime, Former Governor Andrew Cuomo has been hitting the pavement. He told Eyewitness News that he made some mistakes that cost him the Democratic nomination.
He's hoping for a Cinderella story ending in the general election, saying he believes he offers something better to constituents.
Meanwhile the mayoral race frontrunner, Mamdani, has been meeting with business and tech leaders.
He's picked up traditional endorsements already and was in our nation's capitol Wednesday trying to garner more support.
He met with local representatives at a breakfast hosted by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her fellow members of Congress.
For each of these candidates, they believe they are able to win in November in the general election.
While Mamdani is highly popular, Adams' campaign reported raising $1.5 million in fundraising following Mamdani's primary win.
