MANHATTAN, New York (WABC) -- The pregnant widow of the NYPD officer killed in last month's Midtown office shooting gave birth to a baby boy on Sunday.
Officer Didarul Islam was one of four people fatally shot in the Midtown office building at 345 Park Avenue last month.
His wife was 8-months-pregnant at the time of the shooting. The couple has two other children.
Mayor Eric Adams said he stopped by the hospital on Sunday to talk to family members while Islam's wife was in labor.
"We will continue to let them know God works in mysterious ways," Adams said. "As mayor I want to assure the detective and his family that we are going to continue to be there for them, they are our family and the family of this great city, New York."
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch posted a photo of the newborn baby boy, saying "Out of tragedy, a new life has entered this world."
Islam was an immigrant from Bangladesh and was assigned to the 47th precinct at a stationhouse in Baychester. He was on the force for three and a half years and is the first Bangladeshi officer killed in the line of duty in New York City.
He was posthumously promoted to detective.
