NEWARK, New Jersey (WABC) -- There was a moment of sadness and reflection on Friday morning at Newark Liberty International Airport where the Port Authority transferred a sign with indelible ties to 9/11 to the National Park Service.

In 2001, the "Gate A17" sign marked Newark's departure gate for United Airlines Flight 93 which was en route to San Francisco when it was hijacked.

The passengers fought the hijackers, causing the plane to crash near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, preventing further devastation but killing all 44 people onboard.

Now that gate sign will be permanently preserved and displayed as part of the Flight 93 National Memorial.

"Our mission moving forward is to make sure that future generations of Americans and those visitors from around the world that come there will be able to recognize that common citizens, right underneath this gate, who thought they were going to go about their ordinary day transformed into extraordinary heroes," said Adam Shaffer with the National Park Service.

The National Park Service presented the Port Authority with an American flag that has flown over the Flight 93 memorial.

It's a gesture that affirms the agencies' shared commitment to never forget.
