Dangerous temperatures grip NYC as another heat wave gets underway
Jaysha Patel reports from Lower Manhattan.

NEW YORK (WABC) -- The New York City area is experiencing its second heat wave of the summer with "feels like" temperatures easily reaching the triple digits.

New York City officials have activated the city's Heat Emergency Plan.

City agencies and partners are working together to provide access to cooling centers, conducting outreach to at-risk people and working with utility providers to remind people to limit power use at home so they can maintain grid reliability.

Nighttime and early mornings are not expected to provide much relief from the sweltering conditions. Overnight and early morning lows are expected to fall only to the 70s or higher.

In addition to the sweltering conditions, smoke from Canadian wildfires is expected to continue to create hazy conditions in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

Over the weekend, smoke from multiple wildfires in Canada prompted an air-quality alert.

Relief from the heat is expected to come by the end of the week as temperatures drop to highs in the 70s and 80s by Thursday and Friday.

"Heat is a real issue, don't take it for granted, we are expecting heat indexes here above 100 degrees, we've been saying this every day, more and more hot weather is coming to us, we feel it now, this is some serious heat," Mayor Eric Adams said. "We are telling folks cooling centers are open, please go in them, if you need an air conditioner, if you work outside, please make sure you take breaks, stay hydrated, don't keep pets inside cars, don't leave children inside cars."

Cooling centers are open in the city through Wednesday. Click here to find your nearest cooling center or call 311.
