Guest stars for season three include Janelle James, Gabrielle Union, Neil deGrasse Tyson and more
"The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder" is back with more wild adventures for season three.
The series stars Kyla Pratt (Penny Proud), Tommy Davidson (Oscar Proud), Paula Jai Parker (Trudy Proud), JoMarie Payton (Suga Mama), Cedric the Entertainer (Uncle Bobby), Karen Malina White (Dijonay Jones), Soleil Moon Frye (Zoey Howzer), Alisa Reyes (LaCienega Boulevardez), Carlos Mencia (Felix Boulevardez), Alvaro Gutierrez (Papi), Raquel Lee Bolleau (Nubia Gross), Marcus T. Paulk (Myron), and Melissa De Sousa (Sunset Boulevardez).
On The Red Carpet recently spoke with creator and executive producer Bruce W. Smith and executive producer Ralph Farquhar about what viewers can expect this season.
"The first episodes actually take Penny and her family around the world, right? And that's fun to see the family on vacation. So, you know, we start in Paris and we go through Brazil, Nairobi, and it was important to tell that story because, A) it was good to see the family kind of unified to take this adventure, and then B) because you get to see a spectrum of blackness all around the world," said Smith.
Other episodes will get into some thought-provoking topics, like colorism.
"It's the quintessential episode that talks about one of the most taboo subjects in the Black community... the brown paper bag. That is always the guide to who's lighter than a brown paper back who's darker than brown paper bag," said Smith.
"It's a Black thing, if you will. And that's really what colorism is about," added Farquhar. "That's the thing that sort of hangs around our necks as Black people, because we still feel the effects of it to this day, because there's every shade of African American in this country, or in the world, certainly. And so we kind of talk about that. So it's a very good episode. I think people are going to be enlightened. And for those who aren't aware of what it is, they will be aware after this."
The show mixes heart and humor with each episode, a balance that Smith and Farquhar believe is a reason for its success.
"I think what's great about this show is we can actually go from a fun romp where we take you around the world with lots of comedy, you know, a super spy episode, and then tackle some real politics, some real issues within our community," Smith explained.
"It was interesting that people somehow were relating more to an animated family than a lot of live-action families," added Farquhar. "It allows us to be very intimate and very intentional in terms of the emotions we want to get across."
Season three features some notable names as guest stars, including Janelle James, Sanaa Lathan, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Lynn Whitfield, Adrienne Warren, Kirk Franklin, and Bubba Wallace. Sade Baderinwa, an anchor at our sister station WABC, also makes a cameo. But there's one star that's been eluding the team and Farquhar took a moment during our interview to make his plea.
Jennifer Lopez.
"I just want to say to Jennifer, you know many, many years ago I took a chance on you. She knows what I'm talking about. You know, it worked out well. I would love you to come and do an episode of Proud Family."
Your move, J-Lo!
