NEWARK, New Jersey (WABC) -- A stray cat who was stranded on a busy highway median in the sweltering heat was rescued by a New Jersey state trooper.

Calls came in to police after a terrified stray cat was spotted along Highway 280 in Newark with nowhere to escape.

New Jersey state troopers reached him in time and were able to corral him to safety.

With the help of Paterson Animal Control, the cat was taken to Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge Inc. for immediate medical care.

Now named Conan, the cat had a laceration over his eye.

Police are not sure how he ended up in such a dangerous situation.

RBARI's donors pledged to match every dollar donated to Conan's medical fund up to $5,000, extending the organization's recent cat and kitten plea for help.
