CBV increases access to opportunity for BIPOC + women entrepreneurs by investing in their ventures + leadership

About us

Camelback Ventures aims to diversify social innovation, by giving underrepresented, early-stage entrepreneurs access to the tools they need to be successful. Camelback was built with the notion that genius is equally distributed across communities, but access to funding and start-up mentoring is often limited in communities of color and with women. Camelback provides entrepreneurs with greater access to resources. Camelback Ventures awards its fellows with 1:1 coaching, capital (start up funding, up to $40,000) and access to investors and networks (connections). Camelback Fellows, most of whom identify as people of color and/ or female, work in communities across the country. To date, Camelback fellows have built social organizations that have impacted the lives of tens of thousands of young people across the country. Camelback fellows have built STEM-based social mobile games, a charter school network in New Orleans, a mobile app to help recognize strong academic performance, and a platform to help universities track and develop at risk scholarship students. Camelback Fellows have collectively gone on to raise over $14 million in funding. For three years in a row, 3 or more Camelback Fellows have been featured in Forbes 30 Under 30.

  • When Reuben Ogbonna II joined our Fellowship in 2020, he dreamed of creating a school that would prepare young adults for high-paying, purpose-driven careers in tech—without a college degree. Today, that dream is reality. The Marcy Lab School in Brooklyn equips diverse students with the technical skills, professional development, and industry network to step directly into roles at companies like Bloomberg, Spotify, The New York Times, and J.P. Morgan. Last year, our team visited Marcy Lab to see that impact in action—and witness how Reuben’s vision is transforming communities through opportunity, wealth creation, and generational change. ➡️ Reuben’s story is part of our #MyFirstFunder series, celebrating 10 years of investing in the genius of under-resourced entrepreneurs and watching their ideas change the world. • Great ideas don’t happen in silos—they happen when people come together, share their brilliance, and work toward the greater good. Last week, Camelback Ventures CEO Shawna Young, MBA joined Wizdom Powell,PhD, MPH, CMHC and Alphonso David at Martha's Vineyard African American Film Festival for a powerful conversation on shaping the future of innovation for Black communities. A takeaway that stuck with us? We must not only ensure that people of color have access to jobs and investment opportunities in emerging technologies, but also create spaces where we can connect, collaborate, and share resources. Progress happens when we weave those connections—when we work together, not apart. If you’re at the Vineyard this month, drop a comment—we’d love to connect. #CamelbackVentures #GlobalBlackEconomicForum #MarthasVineyard #tech

  • "Maybe joy is the most durable, unhackable tech we’ve got—revolutionary code shaping how we gather, resist, imagine, and build anyway." - Naimah Reflecting on these brillian words from our new Chief Development Officer, Naimah Bilal (Naimah B.), while she attended the National Urban League conference last month.

Just back from the National Urban League Conference in Cleveland repping Camelback Ventures. Huge thanks to Dennis G. Serrette for your wisdom, leadership, and warm hospitality throughout the week. One moment stays with me- as I visited small business booths at the Expo a young person with a mini mic stopped me and asked 🎤: “Do you think racial justice and equity still matter?” With NUL just declaring a State of Emergency for Black America, the question hit me like a swimmer’s plunge into cold water—sharp and familiar. I said yes 👍🏾, and added something about the ‘radical promise’ racial justice holds—collective liberation. If felt like those the words formed with fragile conviction in my mouth. . . made fragile only by the way that promise is seemingly unraveling before our eyes. And yet, even amid this unraveling, I witnessed joy in Cleveland. At the Small Business Matters Summit, at the Women of Power Luncheon—there was vision, celebration, ululation, and love. The whole paradox (joy and unraveling) has me pondering: Is the emergent innovation of our time the ability to remain joyous (eyes fixed on that unmet promise) even as autocracy gains unceded ground? I won’t go too far out on this ledge 🫷🏾, but maybe joy is the most durable, unhackable tech we’ve got—revolutionary code shaping how we gather, resist, imagine, and build anyway. #NUL2025 #CamelbackVentures #RadicalPromise #WomenOfPowe##Entrepreneurship #Equity #RacialJustice #JoyAsTech

  • "Before Camelback, I was a teacher with a dream." When Reuben Ogbonna joined our Fellowship in 2020, he was ready to build something others would deem "impossible". With just a vision for a new kind of school, Reuben became a Camelback Fellow in 2020, during our first virtual cohort. We were proud to be his first funder, but even prouder of what he’s built since. Today, Reuben Ogbonna II is changing lives through The Marcy Lab School—offering young adults an accelerated path to high-paying tech careers, financial freedom, and generational wealth. Today, the school partners with some of the biggest employers in the industry, including Bloomberg, Spotify, The New York Times, and J.P. Morgan. As we celebrate 10 years of Camelback Ventures, we’re honoring founders like Reuben—leaders who remind us that investing in diverse founders creates the future of innovation. #CamelbackVentures #Camelback10 #firstfunder
