Last week for Juneteenth I went to my first Blackbird Collective event as a Visionary Member, got to meet some fantastic people, and hear founder Bridgid Coulter Cheadle speak on the importance of the day and the space. In a time where Los Angeles is caught in political crossfire and every piece of media being thrown at us feels scary/sad, it was incredible to have physical place to feel celebrated. There was so much joy in this space; smiling faces, passionate conversations, a sense of welcome. I haven't felt this is a room of strangers for a long time, and so thankful to contribute to a community that continues this tradition. Juneteenth is a day of remembrance, reflection, and restoration. It was the day when enslaved Black people residing in Galveston Texas learned of their freedom. In this political turmoil, I find it difficult to mark this day as a celebration. It is a reminder of our past, and present, and an urgency to shift the narrative of our future. In 1865 the enslavement of Black people ended. In 1968, the Beatles released a song called Blackbird. Today, Blackbird Collective founder Bridgid Coulter Cheadle is carrying the torch by giving us a safe space to take our broken wings and fly. What's next? How do we soar amid turmoil, hatred, and divisiveness? Whether you are an ally, a person of color, or Black living in America, my hope is you use this moment to understand our history and commit to systemic change through your voice and action.
